Conversation 1

Here is the text of the conversation for speaking practice test 1.

Student 1:  Hi Tom!  Thanks for agreeing to come over to see me.  I really need your help!

Student 2:  No problem . . . but you’ll have to tell me, what on earth has happened?

Student 1:  Well, I was telling you about that group project for our research methods class . . . you know, the one where we’re supposed to carry out a case study with three other people from the class.

Student 2:  Oh, yeah, I remember you talking about that last week.  Have you got a problem with it?

Student 1:  Yeah, I do.  I mean, it’s not a problem with conducting the research.  It’s a problem with one of my classmates in the group.

Student 2:  What’s wrong?

Student 1:  Well, one of the students in the group just isn’t doing her part of the work.  Now I just don’t know what to do!  I mean, I’m really beside myself!

Student 2:  Well, I had a similar situation in one of my classes last semester.  We had one person who wouldn’t do any of the work for a group project.  So, after we gave her a second chance to participate, and she refused.  Well . . . we told our professor about it.  Then the professor excluded the non-participating student from the project.  Because, otherwise the rest of you will end of having her part in the project, and then she’ll just get an easy grade for all of your hard work!  So, if I were you, I’d give her a second chance, but if she refuses, I’d speak to the professor about it.

Student 1:  Oh, great.  That’s really sensible advice.  Thanks so much for helping me.
